Juneau, AK (KINY) – The City and Borough of Juneau announced that 10th Street will be closed between Egan Drive and Glacier Avenue for significant construction improvements beginning Tuesday, June 4. The project is expected to continue throughout the summer until the work is completed.
This section of 10th Street has long been a critical artery for Juneau, connecting residents and visitors to key areas of the city. The upcoming construction marks the first major overhaul in over two decades, aiming to address aging infrastructure and enhance safety and accessibility for all.
The construction will involve a comprehensive upgrade of the area, including resurfacing the roadway after replacing sidewalks, streetlights, the main water line, and the sewer and storm systems. Additionally, there will be minor storm drain improvements at the intersection of West 8th Street and Glacier Avenue. These upgrades are part of the city’s ongoing efforts to modernize infrastructure and improve public services.
This project is especially significant considering Juneau’s unique geographical challenges. Nestled between mountains and waterways, the city relies heavily on a well-maintained and efficient transportation network. The improvements to 10th Street will not only enhance daily commutes but also support local businesses and tourism by providing a safer, more reliable route through the heart of Juneau.
During the construction period, all vehicle traffic and pedestrian walkways will be rerouted around the project area. Officials request that the public adhere to the marked detours to ensure safety for both the public and construction workers. The City appreciates the community’s understanding and patience during this time of improvement.
Residents and visitors might recall that the last major construction effort in this area significantly boosted local commerce by improving access to shops and restaurants. Similarly, this new project is expected to bolster the local economy by facilitating smoother transit and creating a more welcoming environment for tourists.
