Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – National Weather Service Juneau has issued a blizzard warning starting at 6:00 a.m. Monday.
9-14 inches of snow is expected in Juneau, but it could be less or more than that. The most important thing to remember, Meteorologist Andrew Park said, is to stay safe and be prepared.
While Juneau is already experiencing light snowfall, the amount of snow will increase heavily on Monday morning.
Winds that were predicted to be 45-50 mph early Sunday, are now looking to be as high as 60 mph.
This is especially likely in areas like downtown Juneau, Douglas, and Auke Bay which are more exposed to wind.
The combination of high wind and strong snow leads to low visibility. 1/4-mile visibility is expected at times.
“The snowfall rates combined with 60 miles gusts have the potential to reduce visibility pretty drastically,” Park said.
Travel will be difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact morning and evening commutes, and the strong winds could cause tree damage, according to the weather statement.
Monday night into Tuesday morning, the snow will begin to mix with rain, most likely creating icy conditions.
“This is a complex storm, there could be a lot of changes as the system moves ashore,” Park said.
