Capital City Fire Rescue responded to the 2800 block of Postal Way for a residential structure fire

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – On Sunday, at approximately 6:53 PM, Capital City Fire Rescue responded to the 2800 block of Postal Way for a residential structure fire.

Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single apartment unit of a multiple-apartment complex to have heavy smoke and flames showing from a bedroom window.

The fire was contained in the single apartment unit. The occupant was not home at the time of the fire.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud boom similar to a door slamming prior to the fire being noticed.

Attempts were made to utilize portable fire extinguishers from the outside however, the fire was too large effectively to extinguish prior to fire personnel arriving.

A fire origin and cause investigation began immediately following the suppression activity. The fire started in the bedroom of the apartment however the exact cause has not been identified as there were multiple potential heat sources.

There were no injuries reported. The structure is insured, however, the occupant stated that they did not have renters insurance for personal items.

The American Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance to the occupant as well.

CCFR would like to remind residents about home fire safety and operating smoke alarms.

The winter months are starting and that is when Alaska has the highest number of home fire fatalities.
