Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – The City and Borough of Juneau is applying for a $3 million dollar grant from the United States Department Housing and Urban Development.
The grant would be provided through the Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing program.
The grant provides funding support for communities that are actively taking steps to remove barriers to affordable housing. CBJ is asking for public comment and letters of support to include in the application.
The $3 million dollars would go toward developing a subprogram in future rounds of the Juneau Affordable Housing Fund.
It’s designed to provide gap financing for non-profit organizations, tribal governments, and regional housing authorities that create affordable housing. In a statement, City Manager Katie Koester says that, “As the CBJ continues to focus on housing challenges, this program presents an opportunity to get funding out quickly to partners working on affordable housing projects that meet the community’s most pressing needs.
Since the adoption of the Housing Action Plan, CBJ has been addressing its significant and long-standing housing challenges. Other efforts currently underway include Comprehensive Plan and area plan updates, a Land Use Code Update, Community Development Department permitting software conversion, CBJ land re-zone initiatives and disposals, and a Round Four review of Juneau Affordable Housing Fund applications.
A PRO Housing public information meeting will take place on today from noon to one on Zoom.
The public is strongly encouraged to provide additional comment on the proposal as well as letters of support to be included with the final application.
Comments and letters of support are due by October 12, 2024 and can be sent to Joseph Meyers, Senior Planner at Joseph.Meyers@juneau.gov.
