Coast Guard to hold townhall for Marine Casualty Investigation

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) — On May 16, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Harrigan Centennial Hall, the Coast Guard will hold a townhall to present findings from their investigation into the tragic loss of five lives aboard the passenger vessel Awakin, a casualty that occurred nearly one year ago (May 28, 2023) near Low Island in Sitka Sound. Members of the public are invited to join in person.  

Investigations of marine casualties and their findings are generally intended to promote the safety of life and property at sea. They are not intended to impose civil or criminal responsibility.   

In coordination with this townhall, the U.S. Coast Guard, Sector Southeast Alaska will be conducting a safety campaign to encourage uninspected passenger vessels to obtain a voluntary exam under the Coast Guard Seventeenth District’s 5-Star Safety Program during the week of May 13, 2024.
