Disaster Debris Collection

CBJ staff are working to arrange disaster debris collection for those affected by Mendenhall River flooding. CBJ will notify residents as soon as we have more information and dates for the cleanup.

If you don’t want to wait on a pick-up to dispose of waste like chemicals, paint, and electronics, the CBJ Household Hazardous Waste facility accepts these items FREE. Drop them off at 5600 Tonsgard Court Thursday – Saturday from 8 am – 4:30 p.m.

In the meantime, please follow the guidelines below for any materials that will be part of CBJ’s flood debris collection:

• Bag all waste (where possible)

Reduce the size of larger items (where possible)

• Keep all waste within your property boundaries until notified by CBJ to move it to the right-of-way (ROW) for collection.

• Keep waste separated into the following three categories (see handout at bit.ly/3WWcEmn):

– Residential Waste

– Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

– Construction & Demolition (C&D) Waste

Private haul information:

If you do not want to wait, there are some limited options for debris disposal at the moment.

The Waste Management (WM) landfill is open during regular hours—there are no special hours for disaster debris disposal. Please call WM at (907) 780-7801 for more information about the landfill. If you have bulky items for collection, please contact Alaska Waste at (907) 780-7800 for more information.

WM landfill hours:

• Commercial customers: 7 am – 4 pm Monday – Friday; Saturday 8 am – 12 pm; Sunday closed

• Residential customers: 8 am – 4 pm Saturday

WM landfill rates:

• Household and C&D waste: $215/ton with a minimum charge of $153.32

• Refrigerators/freezers: $115/unit with a minimum charge of $164

Note from WM on potentially asbestos-containing C&D waste disposal at the landfill:

Residents bringing in their own waste or contractors bringing waste from residential dwelling units will have to fill out the Non-Asbestos Certification form (download at bit.ly/4fDpfDd). If the asbestos exemptions apply, the homeowner or contractor will sign the form and provide it at the time of disposal. If the exemptions do not apply, the structure or debris will need to be inspected by an asbestos professional. Please contact WM at (907) 780-7801 for more information.
