Fairbanks, Alaska (KINY) – On Wednesday, May 8, at approximately 10:50 p.m., Fairbanks Police Officers responded to a Romans Way apartment after dispatch received a 911 call from a man stating that a woman had been shot.

Dispatchers could hear a woman say that 62-year-old Eric Matthews had shot her.

Officers arrived on scene and found an adult female victim with a gunshot wound to the neck.

She was transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital (FMH) by Fairbanks Fire Department.

Officers located a handgun on scene and found Matthews hiding under a bed in another apartment.

He initially complied with officer commands, but then started to try to climb out the second story window.

Officers repeatedly asked him to stop, and Matthews actively resisted as they tried to detain him.

Once detained, Matthews was transported to FMH for medical clearance.

Detectives interviewed both the victim and Matthews, who are romantically involved, and they provided different accounts of what had happened.

The victim stated that after an argument, Matthews had held the gun to her neck and she slapped it away.

She stated he held the gun up to her neck a second time, and when she slapped it away for the second time, it went off.

Matthews’ account was that he was handing the gun to the victim to put it away and she knocked it away with her hand and it went off.

He stated that he then called 911 and then ran to his friend’s apartment to hide.

Drugs and alcohol are believed to be a factor in this incident.

Matthews was medically cleared and then placed under arrest for Assault in the First Degree x2, Misconduct Involving Weapons in the Fourth Degree, and Resisting Arrest.
