Alaska (KINY) – Officials warn visitors about the Foraker Fire spreading into park boundaries.
The National Park Service announced that the fire was detected on Friday through remote sensing near the Foraker River drainage on the south side of the Alaska Range. This area is under a Limited Fire Management Option to maintain natural ecological processes. The Bureau of Land Management’s Alaska Fire Service will monitor and manage the fire as needed.
The fire, currently about five acres in size, is burning through black spruce and tundra. Visitors might experience poor air quality due to this and other fires across Alaska. Any air quality advisories from the Alaska Department of Economic Conservation will be posted in the park.
While the Foraker Fire is suspected to have been caused by lightning, the National Park Service notes that 87% of wildfires nationwide are human-caused. Visitors are urged to know burn restrictions and exercise caution in fire-prone areas.
