Ketchikan Landslide

KETCHIKAN, Alaska (KINY) — A landslide occurred around 4:15 p.m. on the bypass near Second Avenue in Ketchikan, causing a power pole to fall and disrupt utilities. Power lines are down in the affected areas, impacting the town’s electricity, internet, and phone services. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles access.

Residents on Third Avenue, Second Avenue, First Avenue, and White Cliff Avenue have been asked to evacuate due to the risk of secondary landslides. The local high school is an emergency shelter, and residents are advised to use Madison Avenue for access. For more information, residents can call 907-228-2383.

In response to the incident, Ketchikan School District Superintendent Michael Robbins announced that all district schools will be closed on August 26, 2024. Staff are not required to report to work as roads need to remain clear for emergency services and cleanup efforts.

Community support is being coordinated for those affected by the landslide:

  • Ketchikan Community Cats Program (KCCP) offers pet carriers and cages, cat food and litter, and large bird cages.
  • Rendezvous Thrift Store manager Russell Anderson provides free items to those impacted by the landslide. Residents can contact him at 907-821-1028 to arrange a meeting.
  • KIC Tribal Members who need assistance can contact Myrna Chaney in the Housing Department at 907-220-6306.
  • The Salvation Army offers clothing, blankets, pillows, and shoes to those in need. They will be available until 10 p.m. tonight and serve a warm meal at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow. Residents are encouraged to sign up in advance by directly messaging the Salvation Army.
  • Moose Lodge #224 accepts blankets, water, and snacks donations for evacuated families. Items can be dropped off at 744 Water Street between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Moose members affected by the landslide are encouraged to reach out if they need assistance.
  • Just Dandy, a local coffee shop, offers free coffee to first responders and those affected by the landslide. Coffee service will be available from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge residents to stay informed and follow safety guidelines.
