Major Disaster Declaration passed for Juneau flood and Disaster Relief by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

JUNEAU Alaska- FEMA recently announced federal disaster relief assistance, now available to the state of Alaska in response to the flood effects of August 5-6, 2024. 

This Major Disaster Declaration money will be provided to the state for the distribution to affected households, businesses and other impacted parties of the State of Alaska more specifically to the City and Borough of Juneau. 

Financial assistance includes but is not limited to, lowered cost loans to aid in covering uninsured property losses, grants for home repairs and temporary housing for those affected. The goal is to aid all affected, businesses and individuals alike recover from the natural disaster suffered. 

The federal funding provided is also available to tribal, state, eligible local governments as well as specific private nonprofit organizations. These organizations are on a cost sharing basis strictly for emergency work and the replacement and repair of locations damaged by flooding in the City and Borough of Juneau. On the other hand, hazard mitigation measures funds are available on a cost sharing basis. 

“We are extremely grateful to see this much-needed support available to our community,” said CBJ Manager Katie Koester. “We know that the impact of the flood on many families has been immense and costly and that, for some, recovery is far from over. As CBJ works to mitigate the impact of future events, it’s heartening to know that those recently impacted now have access to more financial support.”

Collaborating with the State of Alaska in requesting a federal declaration is historic for Alaska. The recognition underscores the resilience and strength of tribal citizens and the community, paving the way for greater collaboration and support in addressing the challenges we face.”

The Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected areas position has been filled by Lance E. Davis. Results of the damage assessments will decide if further designations are to be warranted.
