Mendenhall River flooding update

Juneau is entering its third week of response and recovery after the August 6 Mendenhall River flooding. As the pace of new information slows, we’ll continue to provide these information round-ups two to three times a week.

Keep checking Facebook for the latest updates, or as always, find complete recovery resources and information at juneau.org/manager/flood-response.

For questions, email floodresponse@juneau.gov.

Assembly Makes Emergency Appropriations

On August 19, the CBJ Assembly passed an emergency resolution appropriating $1.055 million for infrastructure repairs and flood response. The funds will be immediately used for the following expenses:

  • Debris and waste removal ($150,000)
  • Mendenhall Wastewater Treatment Plant emergency repairs ($400,000)
  • Stormwater system repairs ($355,000)
  • Glacier outburst flood mitigation working group ($150,000)

At the same meeting, CBJ staff updated the Assembly and the public on flood response and took questions. If you’d like to hear more, a full recording of the Assembly meeting will be available tomorrow on CBJ’s YouTube channel.

Melvin Park Transitions to Self-Help Center

Starting today, the Melvin Park volunteer center has transitioned from a fully manned operation to a Self-Help Station where residents can access essential items (including cleaning supplies) and information. If you have services to offer or items to donate, we encourage you to post this information on the Melvin Park message boards.

Many resources for support and relief are still available. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please email floodresponse@juneau.gov to be connected with the right organization.

A heartfelt thank you to all the incredible volunteers who have dedicated countless hours to response—you have brought much-needed relief to many during an especially difficult time.

For those interested in making other contributions, please visit juneaucf.org for details on how to donate to the Mendenhall Flood relief fund.
