Sitka, Alaska (KINY) – The Mount Edgecumbe trail on Kruzof Island is closed to the public, but will reopen on Saturday, April 27. This trailhead is about ten miles west of Sitka near the Fred’s Creek cabin.
The Forest Service closed the trail this week to allow a contractor to stage construction materials for trail maintenance work planned for later this summer. A helicopter will sling gravel and lumber to multiple locations along the first two miles of trail. Once the construction items are transported and securely placed in the area, no other closures are expected.
Later this summer, an agency crew will return for about two weeks to perform trail repair work. More work is expected next year as well, with a project completion date in summer 2025.
