National Weather Service Addresses Concerns Over Rising Suicide Basin Waters

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – In a social media post, the National Weather Service in Juneau says they’ve been getting concerned calls from residents about the rising water level in Suicide Basin.

They say that there are a lot of rumors and speculation circulating online and so they issued a clarifying statement.

Historically speaking, the basin, once it has released, continues to fill and occasionally has additional releases into the fall before colder temperatures settle in and it freezes over. While most additional releases have been minor and go unnoticed, there have been a few higher releases in the past.Due to the unknown nature of the basin, the shape of it, and the nature of the ice dam at the bottom of the basin, there is no way to forecast when it may release again

They want to reassure the public that the water level in the basin is being monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If and when conditions warrant, they assure they will notify the public immediately.
