Sandbags Part of Flood Mitigation Efforts

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – In an assembly meeting yesterday, CBJ unveiled the first part of it’s flood mitigation plan.

After August’s flood resulted in widespread damage, the Assembly approved a plan that will place heavy duty sandbags from HESCO at flood points throughout the river.

The Army Corps of Engineers will donate enough of them to  cover four miles of riverbank and also 60,000 sandbags for individual homeowners. The city will be responsible for distribution and installation.

The first part of the installation will be where the water first breached the bank in August. Costs are not certain, but this first part of the plan may bring a bill of up to $2 million dollars.

The Assembly will discuss ways to come up with that money at a regular meeting on October 21st.
