Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – City and Borough of Juneau offices and facilities are closed to in-person visits on Wednesday, but open for business via phone and email as Juneau residents are encouraged to avoid non-essential travel in current unsafe weather conditions.

This in-person closure includes City Hall offices, Juneau Public Libraries, Parks & Rec facilities (Dimond Park Aquatic Center, Dimond Park Field House, Treadwell Arena, Zach Gordon Youth Center, Mt. Jumbo Gym), and RecycleWorks. Shéiyi Xaat Hít Youth Shelter remains open 24 hours a day.

All CBJ departments can be reached via phone and email. For contact information, visit juneau.org and choose from the drop-down “Departments” menu, or check the CBJ Directory.

A number of CBJ services are regularly available online:

Streets are filled with slush and ice, in addition to significant amounts of snow remaining in many areas.

Please continue to avoid unnecessary travel as much as possible, both to ensure your own and others’ safety and to allow the CBJ Streets crew to move large equipment like plows and graders through narrow streets.

Like many others in the community, CBJ is grateful for this break in the weather, which will allow crews to clear the remaining streets and move snow away from roads and sidewalks.

Over the last eleven days, CBJ Streets & Fleets Maintenance and the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities have gone above and beyond to keep streets clear, despite near-record amounts of snow in short periods.

In addition to working around the clock to clear and re-clear streets, they have mobilized contractors, worked to source additional equipment, and put every member of the division with a commercial driver’s license behind the wheel. Other teams, including Capital Transit, Parks Maintenance, Landscape Maintenance, Docks & Harbors, private contractors, and good neighbors, have also put in exhaustive hours keeping sidewalks, pathways, parking lots, docks, and other public spaces clear.

For guidance about drain and hydrant clearance, roof snow loads, and other important information, visit the CBJ Newsroom.

The Juneau School District is operating remotely on Wednesday. All in-person classes, RALLY, activities, and meetings are canceled. The University of Alaska Southeast is also doing remote learning and its campus is closed.

State offices are open Wednesday, according to the state of Alaska website.
