Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – Today marks the fifth day since internet service went out for Sitka’s residents, and it could be much longer still. The outage was caused by a break in an underwater fiber optic cable about 30 miles offshore of Sitka. A repair ship is on its way from Seattle and should be at the site of the break by the end of the week, but repairs may take 5 or six days to complete.
GCI has been able to get voice and text services operational but TV, internet, and mobile data remain down. 911 is working as well, and the area is hoping to get by with Starlink satellite connections until repairs are finished.
