Sitka’s Starrigavan Well upgrade complete, winter operations begin

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) – Water is once again available at the Starrigavan Well, with all improvements completed and re-certification by the State of Alaska Department of Environmental Quality (AKDEC) for drinking water collection.

The new system pumps water from the well, as needed, to supply flow rates. Water no longer flows continuously at the rotunda. To address freezing issues, two spigots were added to the outside of the winterized pumphouse (behind the rotunda). This location is where people can obtain water through the Winter, and the rotunda will be useable again in Spring. The spigots supply the same, untreated water from the well.

When collecting water from the pumphouse spigots, please ensure they are turned completely off when finished and do not hang anything from the spigots or pipes, as it could damage the system. Water is diverted from the rotunda during winter operations, so turning on those spigots will not produce water. Please do not remove or tamper with any coverings.

This project was made possible with funding from the Great American Outdoors Act and the expertise of the Tongass Facilities Engineering team.
