Winter hours begin at Southeast Alaska Discovery Center

Ketchikan, Alaska (KINY) - The Southeast Alaska Discovery Center winter hours started on Oct. 1, 2023. The facility will be open Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The center will be closed for all federal holidays.

The center will also be open for cruise ship visits on Oct. 4, 5, 11, 12, 19, and 26, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

There are no fees for events or visits to the Discovery Center during winter months.

Fee collection ends on Sep. 30, 2023, and begins again on May 1, 2024.

Winter Events and Activities

First Saturdays Art Class (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) – Beginning in November, the first Saturday each month SEADC will host artist David Rubin, and other artist volunteers, in a series of art classes focused on the people and landscapes of the Tongass NF (Ages 13+). Ranger Hazel will also lead an art project for children and preteens in the center’s lobby. Discover and develop skills in creating portraits, landscapes, and illustrations of nature.
Second Saturdays “Discovery Family Games” (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) – A variety of enlightening, fun and engaging games where individuals and families compete in solving puzzles, conducting scavenger hunts, deciphering secret messages, etc. All ages are welcome.
Third Saturday Science at SEADC (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) – The SEADC invites experts and educators to share in a monthly science-themed event. Activities include family-oriented science mini-lessons, games, scavenger hunts, experiments, and much more.
Friday Homeschool Programs (1 p.m. to 3 p.m.) – This weekly conservation and science education program is planned for Fridays beginning in October. Friday Night Insights – This popular lecture series will return in January 2024. Friday Night Insights are free programs presented by a variety of speakers with a focus on diverse local topics including science, resources, culture, and history of Alaska.
Alaska Hummingbird Festival and Juried Art Show – The Alaska Hummingbird Festival educates and promotes public understanding of the spring migratory birds of Southeast Alaska through a variety of activities including a juried art show for Alaskan artists.
