Starting July 8, Arkansans can apply for financial assistance with their electricity bills through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The program, which operates on a first-come-first-served basis, provides help with both heating and cooling costs during summer and winter.
LIHEAP offers two types of payments a regular payment is a one-time payment based on household income and the number of household members. Crisis Payment is a one-time payment for those facing disconnection, having a past due balance, or with a prepaid bill for less than seven days.
In the summer of 2023, LIHEAP served 44,278 Arkansans, while 46,121 residents benefited during the winter program, according to the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment (ADEE). This year, the program has been allocated $27 million, with about half of the funding already spent during the winter.
