A Bowie County resident recently received a phone call from someone claiming to be “Deputy Mike Carter,”from the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office. “Deputy Carter” was calling to inform the resident that she had missed jury duty and a warrant would be issued for her arrest. However, the resident was told she could avoid the warrant service if she paid a fee via Cash App.The resident ended up sending the fake deputy a sum of money.

The Sheriff’s Office does not ask for any payment over the phone. Residents who receive a call from someone demanding money and claiming to be with the Sheriff’s Office are encouraged to end the call and then contact the Sheriff’s Office personally for verification.
