In honor of Trauma Awareness Month in May, CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System is offering car seats to eligible families through the Safe Riders Child Safety Seat Distribution and Education Program. Teaming up with the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, the initiative aims to enlighten families about the vital role of child car seats, which have been proven to slash the risk of death in a car crash by over 70%.
Lauren Jamison, trauma program manager at CHRISTUS St. Michael, emphasized, “Lack of proper child safety restraints or incorrectly secured infants and children rank among the top preventable causes of child injury and death.” She added, “Improperly installed car seats pose as much danger as having no car seat at all. We’re fortunate to offer and properly install car seats for those in need.”
Families eligible for a car seat must meet specific criteria:
– Own a vehicle equipped with a functioning seat belt
– Attend a one-hour educational class to master the correct usage and installation of the safety seat
– Ensure the child is present to receive the seat
– Expectant mothers should be in their final trimester
Classes, facilitated by certified car seat technicians, are scheduled based on demand.
