On a Friday evening, police received a distress call from the 700 block of Wilson Street regarding a woman being attacked by dogs. As Officer Chris Flores approached the house, he encountered two large pit bull mixes charging at him. Despite his efforts to deter them with his flashlight, he found himself overpowered as they pounced, knocking him to the ground and mercilessly attacking him.
Fortunately, Officer Matthew Lindsey arrived shortly after that. Fearing for Flores’ safety, Lindsey hesitated to use his firearm but managed to halt the assault by deploying a fire extinguisher on the aggressive dogs. Recognizing the severity of Flores’ injuries, Officer Jose Chavez wasted no time in rushing him to the hospital in his patrol unit.
Later, officers were compelled to act when one of the dogs aggressively approached the Animal Control Officer during retrieval. A well-placed shot incapacitated the dog, allowing for its safe capture, while the second dog was apprehended without further incident.
Flores endured significant injuries to both arms, sustaining muscle damage and 23 lacerations. Currently undergoing surgery, his condition remains critical. Thankfully, the woman attacked by the dogs suffered injuries less severe than those of the officer, according to police reports.
Here is the latest update:
While the doctor had to remove a small amount of the exposed muscle in his arm during the surgery, he said everything appeared to look good. It’s too early to be certain about any possible nerve damage, but there wasn’t any obvious damage that he could see. He was admitted and is resting comfortably in his room.
The woman who was attacked by the dogs before we got there was also admitted to the hospital and is listed as in stable condition.
