Since the passage of Senate Bill 1 in 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has removed over one million people from the state’s voter rolls. The removals include individuals who are deceased, have moved out of state, are non-citizens, or have felony convictions.
Gov. Abbott emphasized that these actions are part of efforts to ensure election integrity in Texas. He stated, “I have signed the strongest election laws in the nation to protect the right to vote and crack down on illegal voting.”
The breakdown of removals includes over 6,500 non-citizens, 6,000 felons, 457,000 deceased individuals, and others on the suspense list or who failed to respond to address confirmations. The state continues to review voter rolls regularly to maintain accuracy and prevent illegal voting.
Gov. Abbott has also increased penalties for illegal voting, raising the offense to a second-degree felony for non-citizens and other ineligible individuals.
