On Thursday, as part of the Angel Tree Program, the Salvation Army distributed more than 800 toys to families in need of assistance this holiday season.
Angel Tree was created by the Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Virginia, shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmas time, according to a news release.
In addition to the help at Christmastime, Salvation Army locations stay in touch with Angel Tree families throughout the year, checking on their well-being.
