The Texarkana Arkansas School District (TASD) has been awarded an $11,457,355 grant to support students at local magnet schools. The funding, provided by the Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP), will be allocated over the next five years to the TASD “Legacy Project,” which aims to assist students and families affected by COVID-19. Developed over the past three years, the project focuses on helping struggling students stay engaged with their education and provides support to families in closing educational gaps.
The Legacy Project will establish three K-5 learning pathways at different campuses, each with a unique focus integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM):
– **Harmony Leadership**: A leadership academy emphasizing storytelling and exploration through music and the arts, offering an integrated curriculum to foster creativity and expression.
– **Kilpatrick Elementary**: A First Responders Academy with three focus areas, providing students with curriculum and real-world experiences related to the work of first responders and medical personnel.
– **Fairview Elementary**: A humanities and innovation center promoting mutual respect, acceptance, and understanding among cultural groups, equipping students with essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills for thriving in a diverse society.
The project will collaborate with local businesses and higher education institutions to support students with project-based learning units, offering opportunities for shadowing and internships focused on civic and community service learning.
“This latest grant marks TASD’s continued success in securing funding through the Magnet Schools Assistance Program, totaling over $34 million in previous awards,” stated Dr. Lloyd Jackson, Superintendent of Schools. “Funding of the Legacy Project reaffirms TASD’s dedication to expanding strong, viable, and relevant educational opportunities that meet the diverse needs of its students.”
