The Texarkana Arkansas Board of Directors approved the installation of a smart metering system to detect water leaks during their meeting on Monday.
Johnson Controls, the company behind the system, gave a presentation highlighting the benefits of the leak detection technology, which has a 99.9% accuracy rate. The system will use satellite technology, operating through existing cell towers, to detect leaks. Water customers will also have access to a web portal and automatic email alerts.
The new system is expected to enhance customer service, save the city money, provide customized customer outreach, and reduce water loss.
In other business, the board approved a lease agreement with Texarkana Regional Airport, allowing the city to apply for a loan from the Arkansas Energy Office to install solar-covered parking.
The board also held an executive session to discuss their search for a new city manager.
The next board meeting is scheduled for Sept. 3, as Labor Day falls on the first Monday of the month.
