The Texarkana Texas Police Department is warning local businesses about a recent scam that has led to significant financial losses. In at least two cases, businesses received calls from out-of-state individuals placing large orders and paying with a credit card over the phone. The orders were picked up by someone claiming to be an employee of the caller.
A few days later, the businesses were informed by their banks that the credit card charges were fraudulent, and the money had to be refunded. As a result, the businesses lost both the merchandise and the money.
The police urge businesses to be cautious when receiving large orders from out-of-town or out-of-state customers. They recommend verifying the identity of the caller to avoid falling victim to this scam. Legitimate customers will understand the need for extra precautions.
