The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department recently dismantled a homeless camp near Garland Avenue and E. 50th Street following multiple complaints from local businesses and residents. Concerns included littering, vandalism, and other disturbances in the area.

According to officials, Superintendent Clay Hicks, along with street crews and TAPD officers, spent several days providing alternatives, directions, and resources to the homeless individuals in the camp. Authorities allowed residents time to pack up before clearing the area.

“No arrests were made; however, verbal warnings were issued, and information on the legality of trespassing, littering, and vandalism on private property was provided,” the police department stated online.

Interim Chief Ed Chattaway emphasized the department’s approach was more than just enforcing the law. “We are aware of the challenges the homeless population faces and wanted to provide resources and information directly to them while also protecting the rights of businesses and citizens,” he said. He also noted that any future encampments in the area would lead to arrests.

For those experiencing homelessness, the Texarkana Homeless Coalition offers resources including emergency shelters, food pantries, and assistance with clothing, housing, and utilities. The HUD also provides a list of resources for those in need.
