Texarkana Salvation Army Opens Cooling Center Amid Dangerous Heat

With triple-digit temperatures posing a danger, especially to the homeless, the Salvation Army of Texarkana has opened its doors as a cooling center. Despite the strain on resources, the facility offers a vital refuge.

The center can accommodate up to 65 people, while the area has an estimated 100 to 200 homeless individuals. Captain Juan Gomez highlights the increased costs in staffing, electricity, water, and food. “We go from serving a sack lunch to a hot meal, requiring extra staff and a cook,” Gomez explained.

Typically, the cooling station opens in mid-July, but this year’s early heat wave has prompted earlier action. The organization is seeking financial donations, water bottles, and fans. For more information on how to help, call 870-774-2701.
