Texarkana Water Utilities is implementing a temporary change in water disinfection methods starting May 10, 2024, lasting about 4 weeks. The water will remain safe to drink. Instead of chloramine, TWU will use chlorine only, known as “free chlorine,” during this period. This switch is a standard preventive maintenance procedure for water systems in Texas and Arkansas.

Over time, minerals may accumulate in pipes, potentially causing discoloration. Other issues like nitrification and biofilm growth can also occur, reducing disinfectant effectiveness. Using free chlorine will help clean the lines, minimize nitrification and biofilm, ensuring high-quality water for TWU customers.

During this period, citizens may notice increased flushing of fire hydrants by TWU staff. Certain low-flow water lines will be flushed more frequently to ensure proper movement of the free chlorinated water throughout the distribution system.
