Texarkana Water Utilities (TWU) will temporarily switch its water disinfection method starting September 16 for about four weeks. During this time, TWU will use chlorine, also known as “free chlorine,” instead of the usual chloramine mixture (ammonia and chlorine). This change is part of regular maintenance to keep the water system clean and safe.

The water will remain safe to drink, though some customers may notice a stronger chlorine smell or slight discoloration, which should improve after a few weeks. Residents may also see more frequent flushing of fire hydrants as part of the process.

TWU advises kidney dialysis patients to check with their equipment suppliers for any necessary adjustments. Fish tank owners are also encouraged to verify their equipment settings, though most systems used to remove chloramines should work the same for chlorine.

TWU will monitor chlorine levels daily to ensure water quality meets all safety standards.
