Texas A&M Texarkana is expanding its academic offerings with the introduction of two new colleges and a new school.
University officials believe these additions will address the workforce needs of the growing East Texas region.
“The announcement of the two new colleges and the new school is truly a momentous occasion for us,” said Melinda Arnold, TAMU-T provost and senior vice president of academic affairs.
On Tuesday, Arnold unveiled the new College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services, the Honors College, and the School of Professional Education and Community Engagement to a room full of faculty, staff, and community leaders.
Craig Nakashian, the new dean of the Honors College, believes this designation will make Texas A&M Texarkana a top choice for students both locally and beyond.
“High-performing students who have excelled in high school, community college, or another university will be drawn here to enhance their already valuable degrees and work closely with our faculty,” Nakashian said.
The university plans to introduce eight new healthcare-related programs next year, a project that has been a decade in the making. Heather McKnight, the new dean of the College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services, emphasized the importance of these programs for the community.
“The nursing shortage in Texas is severe, and there’s also a high demand for physical therapists, occupational therapists, and respiratory therapists. These professionals are crucial for our area,” McKnight said.
Additionally, the new School of Professional Education and Community Engagement will offer adult learners the opportunity to complete their degrees in a shorter timeframe.
