Next week, TxDOT and Red River Federal Credit Union are hosting a free car seat inspection event open to the public. This initiative is critical, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that 46 percent of child car seats are not properly installed or used. In 2022, Texas experienced the tragic loss of 72 children under the age of 8 in road accidents, many due to improper restraints.
The event will be held in the Red River Credit Union on Summerhill Road on Monday from 1 – 4 PM. Certified technicians will be on-site to thoroughly inspect car seats and ensure they are correctly installed. Caregivers will also receive important education about the appropriate safety seats for children of different ages and sizes. A limited number of free car seats will be available to further promote community safety.
Texas law requires all children under 8 years old to be securely fastened in a car seat unless they are taller than 4 feet, 9 inches. “There will be no judgement,” says Traffic Safety Specialist Emyli Speer at TxDOT’s Atlanta District. “Car seat installations can be tricky to navigate. We’re here to assist.”
